PITCH PERFECT 2 EARNED MORE MONEY THAN MAD MAX ON THURSDAY NIGHT

Interesting news coming in some few hours ago and most likely a *hula shula vurbish* and though Max senpai may have hit the gag sometime ago, in the mean time, he’s getting his ass kicked by a bunch of young a cappella singers #I_love_Accapella . Of the two highly anticipated sequels opening this weekend, Pitch Perfect 2 out earned Mad Max: Fury Road at early screenings.
Both films debuted to the public last Thursday night (2 nights ago), and according to Deadline and their sources, significantly more people were drawn to the theatre to see the further adventures of the Barden Bellas than they were the post-apocalyptic action fronted by Max Rockatansky. Fury Road took in $3.7 million Thursday night in 3000 theatres, while Pitch Perfect 2 earned $4.6 million on 2600 screens, not only besting its competition in total gross, but scoring a significantly higher per screen average, isn’t that freaking amazing? It was surprising though.
So, while still obviously early in the going, these numbers put Pitch Perfect 2 on pace for an approximately $50 million opening weekend, while Fury Road is on pace to earn around $40 million. This is very good news for one of these movies, and not so hot for the other right?!.
Pitch Perfect 2 was produced on a budget of approximately $29 million, which, in real world terms is a lot of money, though relatively little in Hollywood. At this rate, it will almost double its entire shooting cost after this weekend. The first movie was a slow burn that had legs and built up steam over time. If the sequel follows a similar path, banking on a fully engaged young female demographic, Universal stands to make a tidy profit, and all the talk of Pitch Perfect 3 that has already been going around won’t be just talk for much longer.
Fury Road, on the other hand, cost significantly more, with numbers between $150 and $200 million being bandied about. Either way, that’s a lot of money. Basically one long chase scene, the massive stunts (they wrecked hundreds of cars), far off locations (Namibia), big stars (Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron), and special effects added up.
When you factor in the international box office, Fury Road will likely make its money back—action translates well, especially in this case, as dialogue is a rather sparse commodity—but unless it pulls of some crazy financial acrobatics, we’ll have to wait and see what becomes of George Miller’s numerous proposed sequels. Warner Bros. is hoping that strong early reviews—it has currently sits at a 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with almost 200 reviews—will translate into a longer, more profitable run, and they also has the 3D markup to consider.
No matter how the box office results shake out, you should totally go see both Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road. The first may not be quite as good a movie as its predecessor, but it’s a blast and will more than satisfy extant fans, and the second, well, it’s just totally bananas and may light your hair on fire. Both are in theatres now.
Well, if Pitch Perfect wasn’t my favourite Acapella movie, I’d definitely scream, cos you just can’t compare fury road in terms of make, but sales..., that’s okay.

ZIMBABWE COMICS ARE SERIOUS BUSINESS

www.comexposed.com

The comic scene in Africa is getting bigger with each year and looks like its about to explode with several Comic Cons springing up. One of such is the Zimbabwe Comic Con happening in April in Harare. While others still argue on whether what we actually have can be called an Industy Eugene Mapondera takes a dive and analysis if really comics is serious business. Check out excerpts from the article after the cut

Its not uncommon in Africa to hear questions directed at people who make a living creating comic books or in the arts like, “Are comic books serious business?” or “Aren’t comic books for children?” . Most professionals and parents to young people in Africa who grew up in a time when professions like teaching , nursing accounting, law and medicine were the expected career paths find it worrying or bewildering at the least that a young person may seek to pursue a professional career as a comic book artist or writer. It simply doesn’t equate to “serious business” or “real work” .Comic books invoke visions of toddlers gathered around TV sets on Saturday mornings watching Tom and Jerry or tearing up a dated and boring newspaper cartoon after starring at the drawings for a few minutes. On this note This article aspires to look at the reality and viability of comic books today in the world and their potential in Africa. And hopefully will prove that Comics are “serious business”.

Naija Treks' visit to the Legendary Aso-Oke Weavers of Iseyin, Oyo

At times, on say occassional visits to any Nigerian wedding party, and you see the ladies clad in colorful, elegant hand-loomed head ties and wrappers, and the men in Agbada (gowns) and fila (hats) made with the same fabric, and you wonder in amazement at the dexterity wrought by the hands that crafted these fabrics. The fabrics are popularly known as Așǫ oke (pronounced ah-SHAW-okay), and they are woven by the Yoruba people of south west Nigeria.

Naija Treks had gone hiking up the enchanting Oke-Ado Mountains of Ado Awaye all morning, and the sun was still high, gliding across the skies and bathing their sweaty skins with its searing heat. They had seen the tiny patch of shiny roofs of Iseyin town from the summits of Ado-Awaye mountain, punctuating the distant skyline; and though they were burnt out from the climbing, They must have thought it would be a good idea to dash down to the ancient town of Iseyin where the legendary aso-oke weavers dwelt, before returning to Lagos.

Well, Iseyin is twenty minutes drive from Ado-Awaye town, in Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria. The road connecting the two towns sweeps and snakes through a swarm of steep-sided and rounded-topped inselbergs dotting the landscape. The town welcomed them with its bustling central market; food sellers lined the roadsides, displaying heaps and piles of fresh food produce which they had brought down from the surrounding farms. They (Naija Treks) stopped an okada rider, asked him to take them to the compound of any of the aso-oke weavers in the town and they had followed his lead. There were a few weavers at the compound he took them to. He told them that most of the weavers had gone to the big cities for the weekend, to sell the clothes they made in the previous week. They greeted the weavers and sat with them, watching them craft the popular fabrics that turn heads at their parties. The few young men at the loom were descendants of one of the numerous family of weavers in the town. Some kids sat and played around the weavers. They were the children of some of the weavers, and they will also grow to learn this peculiar vocation. The thirty or so minutes they spent with them was amazing, refreshing them with raw knowledge about the weaving techniques used in producing the aso-oke fabric. They mostly enjoyed every minute of their stay. Here are a few photos from their visit:

From the summits of Oke Ado Mountain, Iseyin town appears as a patch of shinny roofs, sitting at the center of the skyline with a part of the town tilting upwards at it leans on a hill side… and the road leading to the town bounces and leaps northwards.

- Iseyin town, Oyo State.

- On their way to the compound of the weavers.

- The weavers sit all day under the tree, looming long panels of hand-spun colored cotton threads into wooden frames and working them into fabrics.

- The weavers smiled all through their stay, cracking jokes as they labored at their vocation. They are happy people and they enjoyed what they did; to them, their job is a great one!

- Aso oke in the making…

- Some kids sat and played around the weavers. They are the children of some of the weavers, and they will also grow to learn the vocation of their ancestors.

- One of kids sitting around the weavers. He will also grow up to learn the trade of his ancestors. He is happy already; and will be happier when he starts making a fortune from the family business.

- She asks how much the finished blue aso-oke costs…. “Do you want to buy right away? we don’t normally sell pieces of the fabric here o”, the weaver replied. They normally sell the fabric in bundles to the market retailers in big cities who sell smaller pieces to buyers.

- The working of the fingers of an expert aso-oke weaver.

…and the weaver’s feet does the bidding of the weaver’s creative mind as he works the threads, controlling the wooden loom with his feet and hands.

Sometimes, the threads tangle up, and one of the assistants quickly goes out to straighten them up…
